ABOUT
Nabila Ayu Aviani (b. 2000) is an Indonesian figurative painter, raised in the United Arab Emirates and now based in The Hague, Netherlands. In 2023, she graduated from the BA Fine Arts department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. Her current works utilise autobiography as an archive, painting as a decolonising tool and narrative figuration as a research tool.
Themes of identity, belonging and displacement are depicted in Aviani’s figurative paintings, rebuilding and recollecting intercultural interactions while shedding light on the emotional and political consequences entailed by existing in between different worlds. Her works are a diasporic reflection in which individual stories can be seen to mirror broader intricacies of cultural and emotional identity.
